A local guide to the coast, chapels and villages of the free Famagusta district.
The free area of Famagusta district stretches from Ayia Napa and Cape Greco to Protaras, Paralimni and the farming villages known as the Kokkinochoria, the "red villages", named after their red soil. It combines some of the island's clearest water with quiet chapels, sea caves and a moving view of the fenced-off town of Varosha.
1. Cape Greco National Forest Park
Between Ayia Napa and Protaras, Cape Greco is a protected headland of cliffs, sea caves and walking trails. Look out for the natural rock bridge known as Kamara tou Koraka and the small chapel of Agioi Anargyroi above the sea. Stay on the marked paths, as the cliff edges are unfenced.
2. Konnos Bay
Tucked into the edge of Cape Greco, Konnos Bay is a sheltered cove of turquoise water surrounded by pine-covered slopes. Arrive early in summer, when it gets busy, and follow local swimming guidance.
3. Nissi Beach
Ayia Napa's best-known beach has fine pale sand and a small islet you can wade towards when the sea is calm. It is lively in high season and quieter in spring and autumn.
4. Ayia Napa Monastery
In the centre of Ayia Napa, this Venetian-era monastery, built around a cave church and a courtyard with an old fountain, offers a calm contrast to the resort streets around it. Dress respectfully when visiting.
5. Thalassa Municipal Museum of the Sea
This Ayia Napa museum explores Cyprus's long relationship with the sea, including a full-size replica of the ancient Kyrenia ship. It is a good stop for families and on hotter days. Check opening hours before you go.
6. Fig Tree Bay, Protaras
Protaras's most famous beach takes its name from a fig tree that has stood here for generations. Clear, shallow water and a small islet offshore make it popular for swimming and snorkelling.
7. Profitis Ilias Chapel, Protaras
Climb the steps to this small chapel on a rocky hill above Protaras for wide views over the coast, especially at sunset.
8. Deryneia viewpoint over Varosha
From the cultural centre in Deryneia you can look across to the fenced-off town of Varosha, abandoned since 1974. The viewpoint and small exhibition give a quiet, thought-provoking insight into the recent history of the island.
9. Paralimni and the Kokkinochoria villages
Paralimni, the largest town of the free district, has a lively centre around its churches and square. Continue inland to villages such as Sotira, Liopetri, Frenaros and Avgorou to see red fields of potatoes, traditional houses and small Byzantine chapels.
10. Liopetri River and fishing shelter
Where the Liopetri river meets the sea, a small fishing shelter with colourful boats and fish tavernas makes a relaxed stop away from the resorts. It is a good place to try fresh local fish.
Before You Visit
Beaches and coastal paths can be crowded in summer and exposed to the sun. Bring water, follow lifeguard and trail guidance, and check museum opening times before travelling.
