A local guide to ancient mosaics, harbour walks and the coast.
Pafos is a compact coastal city where Roman mosaics, medieval fortifications and everyday seafront life sit close together. Start around Kato Pafos and the harbour, then make time for the old town or a short trip along the coast.
1. Kato Pafos Archaeological Park
Explore the remains of ancient Nea Pafos, especially the Roman villas and their remarkable mosaic floors. The park also includes the Odeon, Agora and the remains of Saranta Kolones. Set aside time to walk slowly between the different areas.
2. Tombs of the Kings
These monumental underground tombs were carved into solid rock during the Hellenistic and Roman periods. Despite the name, they were used for high-ranking officials and aristocratic families rather than kings. The site is open-air, so bring water and sun protection.
3. Pafos Harbour and Medieval Castle
The harbour is the city’s best-known meeting point. Stroll along the waterfront, watch the fishing boats and visit the castle at the end of the breakwater. The harbour also makes a convenient starting point for exploring the archaeological park.
4. Pafos Odeon
This small ancient theatre is part of the archaeological park. Its restored stone seating and setting among the ruins make it an easy stop while exploring the wider site.
5. Agia Kyriaki Chrysopolitissa and St Paul’s Pillar
This church and archaeological complex brings together remains from different periods. Tradition associates St Paul’s Pillar with the apostle’s visit to Pafos; nearby mosaics and the ruins of an early Christian basilica are also worth seeing.
6. Ktima Old Town
Head uphill to Ktima for a different feel from the resort seafront. Browse the market area, small shops and cafés, and look for the restored Ottoman-era baths and civic buildings among the older streets.
7. Pafos Archaeological Museum
For context before or after visiting the ruins, the museum displays finds from across the Pafos district, spanning from prehistoric times to later historical periods. Check current opening hours before visiting.
8. Pafos Lighthouse and coastal path
The lighthouse stands within the archaeological park near the shoreline. Follow the paths for open sea views and a sense of how closely the ancient city was connected to the harbour.
9. Petra tou Romiou
About 25 kilometres east of the city, this dramatic coastal rock formation is linked in Greek mythology with Aphrodite’s birth. It is a scenic stop outside the city; take care near the water and respect local signs.
10. Akamas and the coast beyond Pafos
If you have an extra day, explore the wider district toward Polis, Latchi and the Akamas Peninsula. These are regional excursions rather than city-centre stops, so plan transport and check trail or access conditions ahead of time.
